Derek Baum is an experienced television and commercial producer and director with a passion for storytelling. He began his career producing and directing over 500 paid-programming adverts (domestically and internationally produced), winning two Telly Awards for his critically acclaimed commercials. Along the way, his clients included Chase Blueprint, Domino’s Pizza, and Jiffy Lube among others. While continuing to create award winning commercials, he created and produced the docu-series, Hoops Academy, which documented the high stakes drama of high school basketball in the states while following Montrose Christian School during their championship season of 2011. The series aired in prime-time nationally on Fox Sports in Spring 2011 and was praised by many critics as the best basketball documentary since Hoop Dreams. Further, he directed the pilots for Champagne Travel on a White Wine Budget (Venture Channel) and TK’s World (Sobe Films.) Additionally, Derek served as producer on the hit series Swamp Wars (Discovery) and numerous other music videos, live events, and web based original content. Overall, Derek’s productions have been seen on WE, Travel Channel, ION, Oxygen, The Africa Channel, Fox Sports, Venture Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel.
Taking on a new challenge, he has spent much of the last 3 years as an international production consultant and expanded TradeWind Films into the African market, with offices in Lagos, Nigeria and Cape Town, South Africa. Africa is considered the next great digital market, as evidence by the expansion of Netflix and Canal Plus into the continent, and TradeWind Films is now firmly entrenched as African content grows onto the world’s stage. Derek has consulted to multiple companies in Nollywood, the second largest film market in the world according to UNESCO. Further, TradeWind Films handled all the African production for the documentary film CODEGIRL, which can be seen on Netflix, as well as the Sensodyne Commercial campaign in Nigeria. Derek and his team have carved out a great reputation of being able to work within the African market to deliver authentic, African based content at top international broadcast quality levels. Derek is known for his uncompromising belief in top quality production, a firm grasp of the latest in television and commercial trends, and an ability to adapt and deliver in all the various production environments found across the globe. At heart though, Derek is a consummate storyteller whose goal is to tell stories of value that both entertain and inspire.
Jurgens Van Wyk
Senior Producer, Cape Town Office
Jurgens Van Wyk grew up in Zambia and has extensive experience working on documentary productions. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cape Town he has a long lasting passion for television and film production. He has worked throughout Africa for broadcasters such as National Geographic, Animal Planet, BBC, Arte, ZDF and Food Network and this has given him first hand experience at every level of production; planning and logistics in pre-production, camera work & logistics in production, to media management and creative input in post-production. Jurgens also created the series, Africa on a Plate, a cooking show that airs in the USA, UK and on BET Africa. Additionally, he has worked on projects in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco, Zambia, Mozambique, and Uganda. Currently, Jurgens oversees the Cape Town office of TradeWind Films. Jurgens’ vast travels abroad and exposure to various television formats has been the driving force behind his ambition to create original and creative productions for viewers.
Senior Producer, Lagos Office
Kassim Sulaiman is a talented Nigerian producer and director with extensive experience in both the creative and technical aspects of television production who joined TradeWind Films in 2013. He combines an excellent understanding of programming with a strong knowledge of the business and sponsorship side of television. Beginning at NTA, he cut his teeth directing and producing several of the stations flagship TV shows, such as Morning Ride, NTA One on One, and All Night Long. He later served as a producer on Moments with Mo (with Ebony Life’s CEO Mo Abudu), and KoKo Mansion. In 2011, Sulaiman turned his focus from the creative to the technical aspect of production. He was hired as a consultant and tasked with overseeing the setup and creation of the first privately owned TV station in North-Eastern Nigeria, TV GOTEL. Following his consultancy setting the network up, he remained with the network as the VP of Programming. He then returned to Lagos and joined Lighthouse Television & Filmworks as the Executive Director, Marketing and Operations. In this position, he dealt not only with the production of television programs and adverts, he also worked with companies in matching commercial interests with sponsorship opportunities that fit their demographics and goals. In 2015 and 16, Kassim returned to directing with Fanz Championship. In 2017, he directed the number one reality show in the history of Nigeria, Big Brother Nigeria. 2017 was the most successful season in the show’s storied history and replaced The Voice Nigeria as the number one reality show.
Head of Business Development
Jacqueline Sangster was born in New York and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. A US Air Force veteran, she has built an impressive career in sales in both the United States and Jamaica. She is spearheading the new business effort at TradeWind Films for a variety of projects, including our first feature film. Jackie is known for her charm, tenacity, and ability to get the job done. She has a strong understanding of client’s needs and knows how to solve problems before they even occur. Prior to TradeWind Films, Jackie was the Director of sales at AWG Destination Management in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was also the Membership Sales Manager for Desert Mountain in Arizona and was the General Manager at Silver Star Motors in Kingston, Jamaica, the country’s top Mercedes Benz Dealership. Jackie’s organizational and leadership skills were honed while working for the Prime Minister of Jamaica. She was responsible for organizing and executing National, State, Social, Business, and Personal events and functions hosted by the Prime Minister and his cabinet.
